Rowing Concludes Competition At The Lake Wheeler Invitational
April 23, 2022 | Women's Rowing
RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina women's rowing team finished strong in the third and final round of the Lake Wheeler Invitational.
Syracuse placed first with 83 points, followed by Duke (82), Penn (80), Louisville (68), Clemson (60), Miami (40), Boston U (37), UCF (36), Oklahoma (35), Navy (25), Kansas (17), UNC (5), Bucknell (5), Georgetown (5), Bucknell (5), Temple (3), and Boston College (2).
"Today, we gave our crews some very specific objectives: take bigger risks, take them earlier, and trust what you have been doing in practice every day," said North Carolina head coach Erin Neppel. "We found ourselves in some good boat races, which we really needed going into ACCs."
The 3V8 crew for UNC kicked off the day with a fifth-place finish. In the 2V4 race, the Tar Heels edged Kansas by four seconds to take fourth place. The 1V4 battled hard throughout the race but dropped to fifth place.
As noon approached, the varsity eight boats took to the water for intense competition. The 2V8 crew closed the gap the last 1000 meters but fell behind Kansas by three seconds to finish fifth. With a strong effort in the day's final race, the 1V8 boat chased down Kansas to narrowly take fourth by a margin under a second.
"The 1V8 and 2V4 were able to come from behind and beat Kansas in their races today, but we also saw the 2V8 make up a ton of margin with those guys, which was a huge improvement over yesterday evening," Neppel said. "Not satisfied, but ready to start from here when we get back to work on Monday."
Up next, the Tar Heels will travel to Lake Hartwell, S.C., for ACC Championships on May 13-14. UNC will battle with eight ACC foes for a shot at the conference championship.
