SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Carolina softball team fell to No. 24 Notre Dame 7-5 in the second game of the weekend series on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Irish clinched the series win.
Carolina (23-24, 6-14 ACC) out-hit Notre Dame (34-9, 12-5 ACC) 10-7 in the game but struggled to plate runners, leaving 11 on base.
The Tar Heels opened the game hot with Skyler Brooks drawing a leadoff walk, followed by a Sara Jubas single to left. Both were plated by Taylor Greene who hit her seventh home run of the season, a shot over right field, to make it 3-0 Carolina.
However, the Irish were able to plate four runs in the home half of the inning on two hits, including a home run of their own, to take a 4-3 lead.
Notre Dame added to its lead in the bottom of the third, hitting a second home run, a two-run shot, before hitting a sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.
The Tar Heels were able to get one run back in the top of the sixth, with pinch runner Aneshia Jordan scoring on a wild pitch.
In the top of the seventh, Kiannah Pierce hit a leadoff double, followed by a Greene bunt single. Destiny Middleton scored Pierce with a sacrifice fly to make it 7-5.
Despite having the bases loaded, Carolina was unable to get any more runs across in the inning.
