May 12, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina's Chris Gray has been selected as one of five finalists for the men's Tewaaraton Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate lacrosse player. The graduate attackman was a finalist last year and is the first Tar Heel to be named a finalist twice for the prestigious honor. Jed Prossner in 2004 and Marcus Holman in 2013 are the only other Tar Heels to be named a finalist.
Gray, from Wading River, N.Y., ranks fourth in the nation in points per game (5.71), fourth in goals (3.43), and 16th in assists (2.29). He leads the Tar Heels in all three categories.
Gray was selected second overall in the 2022 Premier Lacrosse League College Draft Tuesday night by Atlas LC. He led the Tar Heels in goals (48) and assists (32) this year. After collecting six points in his final collegiate game against Duke, Gray now stands atop the NCAA Division I all-time career points list with 401 career points passing Lyle Thompson of Albany. Gray cements himself in the Carolina history books as he finishes his career for the Tar Heels second all-time in career points (219), fourth in career goals (124), and fourth in career assists (95).
"We are incredibly proud of these talented student-athletes," said Tewaaraton Foundation President Andy Phillips. "They've given us record-setting performances and have distinguished themselves as the best in college lacrosse. It's with great excitement that we look forward to hosting them when the Tewaaraton Ceremony returns to the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian on June 2."
