Baseball Edges Wake Forest In Series Opener
May 13, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – Max Carlson pitched five strong innings, Vance Honeycutt hit a two-run home run and North Carolina defeated Wake Forest on Friday, 3-2, to earn its fourth consecutive win.
Mac Horvath also drove in a run for the Diamond Heels (30-18, 11-14 ACC), who have won seven of their last eight games.
"Before the game today I talked to our team about John Wooden's definition of adversity because we had it," UNC Head Coach Scott Forbes said.
"These guys kept fighting and kept working. You start winning those one run games, which we won two at NC State, your team believes more that you're going to win them."
Tommy Hawke had an RBI single for Wake Forest (34-15-1, 11-13-1), who has lost seven of its last 10 ACC games.
Carlson allowed two runs on four hits, fanning five and walking four in five innings pitched for the Diamond Heels, who have won each of his last three starts.
Originally scheduled to be played at 6 p.m., the game started at noon due to the threat of severe weather in the forecast later in the day.
Sophomore Davis Palermo struck out Michael Turconi swinging to end the game, with the tying run on second base and go-ahead run at first base.
Palermo pitched two scoreless innings and fanned a pair without issuing a walk to earn his fourth save of the season. Shawn Rapp (3-0) earned the win, tossing two shutout innings and striking out three after taking over for Carlson in the sixth.
"At the end of the day is about getting to your strength and right now our strength is Davis Palermo at the end of the game," Forbes said. "We almost started Davis in the eighth because he's a six-out guy, but the matchup was good for Rapp. Rapp getting through those innings was key for us."
Honeycutt sent his home run sailing 410-feet over the left field scoreboard to put Carolina ahead in the sixth against WFU starter Rhett Lowder (9-3), who had surrendered just three home runs 77.2 innings pitched before facing Honeycutt.
Lowder scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings with six strikeouts and one walk.
