Rowing Competes On Day One Of ACC Championships
May 13, 2022 | Women's Rowing
CLEMSON, S.C. – The North Carolina women's rowing team had a solid first day at ACC Championships on the water at Lake Hartwell. The championship regatta opened with two heats for each race on Friday morning.
The Tar Heel boats competed against a strong field that included ranked squads in No. 11 Syracuse, No. 14 Duke, and No. 16 Virginia.
"Our goal was to get at least one boat to a grand final, so we did come up short there today," said North Carolina head coach Erin Neppel. "That being said, this North Carolina team was in the mix for those last spots and raced well through the very end, particularly in the 3V and 1V, who was only about three seconds out. The 2V saw a substantial improvement from 2021 in the heats. All five crew have an opportunity for redemption in their finals tomorrow morning, which is where we have turned our undivided attention."
The 3V8 crew kicked off the day with a fourth-place finish falling behind Notre Dame by only three seconds. The 1V8 boat edged Boston College by three seconds to finish fourth in the first heat. The Tar Heels raced hard in heat one of the 2V8 race but fell behind in the last 1000 meters to finish fifth.
The 1V4 crew battled Miami throughout the race and narrowly defeated the Hurricanes by almost a second. To conclude day one of the ACC Championships, the 2V4 fell behind early and couldn't recover as they finished fourth in the second heat.
Competition will resume tomorrow at 8:05 a.m. with the 3V8 petite final. Teams will battle it out to claim the ACC title on what looks to be a fantastic day on the water.
