Maher, Scotty Earn Academic All-District Honors
May 19, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse, Women's Tennis, Academics
Two Tar Heel academic and athletic standouts have earned 2021-22 Academic All-District honors, as announced Thursday by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Conor Maher (men's lacrosse) and Elizabeth Scotty (women's tennis) were named to the District 3 teams, which include student-athletes from Division I schools in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Both are now candidates for Academic All-America honors, to be announced in June.
Scotty, a rising senior from Annapolis, Md., is majoring in political science. An NCAA Champion in doubles in 2021, she has helped the Tar Heels to three consecutive ITA Indoor Team National Championships (2020, 2021, 2022), earning all-tournament honors this season. The top-ranked Tar Heels play in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at Illinois, and Scotty also has been selected to compete in the singles and doubles individual draws. She is currently ranked second nationally in doubles, with partner Fiona Crawley, and 30th in singles.
Maher, from Timonium, Md., graduated from UNC earlier this month after majoring in business administration and minoring in entrepreneurship. He earned All-ACC and second-team All-America honors in his junior and senior seasons for the Tar Heels and served as a team captain as a senior 2022. This spring, Maher was recognized as one of UNC's Top 10 Scholar-Athletes, an award that goes to the graduating student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade point averages.
The All-District at-large teams include the sports of beach volleyball, bowling, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, rowing, skiing, swimming/diving, tennis, men's volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
