May 23, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina juniors Danny Serretti and Angel Zarate, and freshman Vance Honeycutt earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors on Monday.
The coaches of each of the 14 members schools voted first, second and third teams, an all-freshman team as well as individual superlatives. Ties were not broken.
Serretti was voted second team all-conference and while Honecyutt and Zarate were named to the third team. Honeycutt was also selected to the all-freshman team.
Serretti finished the regular season ninth overall in the league in hitting with a .369 average, the highest by a Tar Heel since Dustin Ackley batted .417 in 2009. He also collected the fourth-most hits (74) of any conference player, while tying for sixth in triples (3) and 14th in doubles (14).
Zarate finished the regular season ranked among the ACC's top 10 in hits (4th) and doubles (7th). He posted career-high tallies in both categories, collecting 74 hits and 16 doubles, while hitting a career-best .346. Zarate hit safely in each of the first 24 games of the season and became the second Tar Heel in the Super Regional Era to reach base in 50 consecutive games.
Honeycutt became the first Tar Heel to earn all-freshman team honors since Serretti and Aaron Sabato in 2019. He led all conference rookies with 28 stolen bases and is the only player in the league to have 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases. His 17 home runs are the currently ninth most in the conference, and second-most among ACC freshmen. He joins Sabato (2019) and Gianluca Dalatri (2017) as the only players to earn all-freshman and all-conference honors in the same season.
The trio of Diamond Heels will take the field alongside their teammates Tuesday against Clemson in UNC's first game of the 2022 ACC Baseball Championship in Charlotte. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Truist Field.
