July 20, 2022 | Football
DALLAS - North Carolina running back British Brooks is a preseason candidate for the 2022 Doak Walker Award, announced Wednesday by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. The award is handed out annually to the nation's top college running back.
Brooks averaged 9.5 yards per carry during the 2021 season with 295 yards on 31 rushing attempts and scored four rushing touchdowns. He caught fire down the stretch by compiling 285 yards in the final three games, including a career-high 124 yards at NC State and 72 yards on five carries against South Carolina in the Duke's Mayo Bowl.
The Gastonia, North Carolina, native scored a 63-yard rushing TD against the Gamecocks, the longest rush of his career and the longest in Duke's Mayo Bowl history.
The award is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
