UNC & Michigan To Square Off In Pair Of Basketball Games In First Jumpman Invitational
July 28, 2022 | Men's Basketball
CHARLOTTE – The University of North Carolina and University of Michigan men's and women's basketball teams will play on consecutive December evenings in Charlotte in the inaugural Jumpman Invitational presented by Novant Health.
Â
The Charlotte Sports Foundation (CSF) and ESPN Events announced the full schedule of games for the two nights of basketball to be played on Dec. 20-21. The event features the men's and women's teams from the original four schools to sign partnership deals with Jordan Brand in both basketball and football: North Carolina, Florida, Michigan and Oklahoma.
Â
Both doubleheaders will take place at the Spectrum Center in uptown Charlotte in partnership with Hornets Sports & Entertainment and will be shown on ESPN networks.
Â
The UNC women play the Wolverines in the first of the four games, which is set for Tuesday the 20th at 7 p.m. The Oklahoma and Florida men play in the second game on the 20th.
Â
The Tar Heels will take on Michigan for just the second time in women's program history, with the first meeting won by Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1987.Â
Â
The Carolina and Michigan men's teams play at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, followed by the Florida-Oklahoma women's game.
Â
This will be the fifth time in the last six seasons the Tar Heel men will play Michigan (the teams met five times through the 1993 national championship and not again until 2017). Last season, UNC defeated the Wolverines, 72-51, in Chapel Hill in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The teams have split the most recent four games beginning with the 2017-18 ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Â
The UNC men will be playing in Charlotte for the first time since the 2019 ACC Tournament. The Tar Heels are 164-27 all-time in Charlotte, including 14-2 in the Spectrum Center. UNC beat Michigan in Charlotte in the 1987 NCAA Tournament in the original Charlotte Coliseum.
Â
"With six of the eight teams competing in last year's NCAA tournaments and their programs' collective storied history we believe the Jumpman Invitational presented by Novant Health will be a premier basketball event not just this year, but in years to come," said Danny Morrison, executive director of CSF. "We look forward to welcoming the players, coaches and fans to Charlotte for what will be a first-class experience."Â
"We look forward to working with the Charlotte Sports Foundation and our sponsors in welcoming these four men's and women's programs to Charlotte.  Our inaugural year will lay a solid foundation in which we can grow the event and give back to the community," said Clint Overby, vice president, ESPN Events.
Â
Tickets for the event will be available to the public in late September. For more information on the events and to sign up for notifications visit jumpmaninvitational.com.Â
