CHAPEL HILL – With eight newcomers putting on Carolina Blue for the first time, fans were able to get an early look at the 2022 Tar Heels in the annual Blue and White scrimmage on Friday evening in Carmichael Arena.
"It felt really good to have the team put on their uniforms, see some people in the stands and go out there and compete," head coach Joe Sagula said.
"Both sides were competitive. Having our seven freshmen putting on a jersey for the first time is very exciting. It's always great to feel the vibe and energy in Carmichael. That feeling never gets old."
In three sets, junior Kaya Merkler shined, leading the Tar Heels with 12 kills and three service aces, while graduate Charley Niego tallied eight kills and three solo blocks in her first match in a Tar Heel uniform.
Seniors Parker Austin and Skyy Howard and junior Aziah Buckner each had six kills on the night, while senior Karenna Wurl had eight digs.
Freshmen setters Anita Babic and Ella Bostic each had their first opportunity to run the Tar Heel offense, with Babic recording 23 assists and three kills while Bostic had 33 assists.
Freshmen Liv Mogridge and Sadie Swift were both forces at the net for the Heels, with Mogridge leading the team with four solo blocks to go with six kills and Swift contributing three solo blocks and three kills.
Other notable freshmen debuts included 11 digs from Maddy May, five kills from freshman Ava Swain and four kills from Cadence Shea.
Up next, Carolina hosts High Point for a preseason exhibition on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
