Men’s Soccer Posts 2-1 Victory Over Air Force In Season Opener
August 25, 2022 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite facing an early deficit, the University of North Carolina men's soccer team responded with a pair of goals in the first half to post a 2-1 victory over Air Force in the 2022 season opener at Dorrance Field on Thursday night.
Following the win, the Tar Heels begin the year at 1-0 and remain undefeated in season and home openers under head coach Carlos Somoano, now in his 12th season at the helm.
Air Force struck first in the fourth minute after Jake Chaffetz sent a pass to Thaddaeus Dewing. With no UNC defenders around, Dewing was able to give the Falcons a one-goal lead early on.
The Falcons' quick advantage was erased when Milo Garvanian found the equalizer in the 30th minute for the Tar Heels' first goal of the season. He connected with a loose ball and sent a strike from the center of the box, past a defender and the gloves of Air Force's goalkeeper.
A cross from Garvanian found Key White to give Carolina the lead right before the break in the 44th minute. Holding off a pair of Falcon defenders, White's shot from just outside the six-yard box found the bottom left corner of the net.
North Carolina dominated possession in both halves, taking 12 shots to Air Force's three while also holding an 8-1 edge in corners. Despite several other UNC attempts to extend its lead, White's goal proved to be the game winner as the Tar Heels begin their 2022 campaign with a victory.
Five Tar Heels had at least one shot on target during the contest, led by Garvanian with a game-high two. Andrew Cordes recorded one save during his UNC debut while Air Force keeper John Byszewski made four between the posts.
The Tar Heels are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 29 with a matchup against South Florida. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Dorrance Field with tickets available for purchase here.
