Garvanian Leads Men’s Soccer Past South Florida, 1-0
August 28, 2022 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A converted penalty kick by Milo Garvanian just 13 minutes into the first half was the deciding factor in a 1-0 win for the University of North Carolina men's soccer team over South Florida on Sunday night at Dorrance Field.
Following the victory, the Tar Heels begin the young season undefeated at 2-0 while the Bulls drop to 0-1-1. The win also marked head coach Carlos Somoano's 150th career win.
A foul on a South Florida defender inside the box awarded Carolina a penalty kick in the 13th minute. Garvanian's attempt to the bottom center of the net for his second goal in as many games was successful, putting the Tar Heels up 1-0 for a lead they would not relinquish.
UNC had several other scoring chances throughout the first half with four of their six shots being on target. The Tar Heels' backline held the Bulls without a shot for the first 30 minutes of action and just two in the opening frame, both which were stopped by Andrew Cordes.
A shot from Jemon Barclay seven minutes into the second half gave South Florida the opportunity to equalize, but a big save from Cordes allowed Carolina to maintain its lead. Akeim Clarke, who registered a game-high five shots, fired a strike in the 62nd minute for one of UNC's best chances to double its lead, but his shot bounced off the left post.
The Tar Heels recorded 12 shots to the Bulls' six in the final 45 minutes to finish the night with an 18-8 advantage, but Garvanian's successful penalty kick proved to be the game-winner.
Cordes registered the first clean sheet of his career, finishing the night with three saves while South Florida keeper Jackson Weyman made six.
Continuing their five-game home stretch to begin the 2022 season, the Tar Heels welcome Florida International to Dorrance Field on Saturday, Sept. 3. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET with tickets available for purchase here.
