August 6, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's soccer team will host 2021 Atlantic 10 regular season champion VCU in an exhibition match Sunday, August 7, at 11 a.m. at Dorrance Field.
Â
Admission is free.
Â
It's the first of two exhibition games for the Tar Heels, who are ranked No. 10 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll. Carolina will welcome 2021 NCAA Tournament runner-up BYU, ranked No. 3 in the preseason, to Chapel Hill on August 13.
Â
The Tar Heels return 10 players who started 11 or more games last season, led by second-team All-America defender Maycee Bell. Sophomore Emily Colton, an All-ACC Freshman Team selection, and junior Avery Patterson also return after ranking No. 1Â and No. 2 on the team in scoring a year ago, respectively.
Â
Junior Sam Meza was a second-team All-ACC and second-team all-region midfielder in 2021, scoring two goals and distributing an assist in 16 matches. She was one of eight players to play more than 970 minutes for UNC last season.
The Tar Heels return 24 letterwinnners and welcome nine true freshmen to the squad, along with the return of redshirt freshman Ally Sentnor, who missed the entire 2021 season after suffering a season-ending injury in an exhibition game against UNCW.
Â
Sentnor and junior Talia DellaPeruta are currently playing with the United States Women's Youth National Team at the Under-20 World Cup in Costa Rica. The U.S. opens play against Ghana on August 11.
