Women's Soccer Blanks VCU In Exhibition Opener
August 7, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior Avery Patterson scored two goals to lead the University of North Carolina women's soccer team to a 5-0 win over VCU in an exhibition match at Dorrance Field on Sunday. The Tar Heels scored three goals in the first half before adding two more after halftime.
Freshmen Tori Dellaperuta and Kate Faasse along with senior Julia Dorsey each added a goal, while Maycee Bell, Tessa Dellarose, and Paige Tolentino were each credited with an assist.
The Tar Heels held a 35-5 advantage in shots and put 16 on target, while a trio of UNC goalkeepers faced two.
"We got to see virtually the entire roster today," UNC Head Coach Anson Dorrance said. "That's always good and that's why you set up preseason games. We looked at all three goalkeepers and they've all got something to contribute in a positive way. I'm excited about that because that's the area we had to replace with the loss of Claudia Dickey.
"We're going to have some quality in the defense with some depth."
Senior Marz Josephson, redshirt freshman Emmie Allen, and freshman Nona Reason each spent 30 minutes in goal.
Patterson opened the scoring with a header off a corner kick from Dellarose in the third minute, then Dorsey scored from two yards out less than a minute later.
"We had a game plan going into where we wanted to capitalize on corner kicks because we have a tall team, and we have dominant headers," Patterson said. Credit to Tessa for getting it there. I just happened to be on the end of it."
Dellaperuta concluded the first half scoring with a diving header in the 44th minute.
Patterson rocketed a shot outside the penalty that sailed past the diving goalie keeper less than five minutes into the second half to make it 4-0.
Faase headed in the final goal in the 81st minute off Tolentino's corner kick.
"I knew that I was I was going to get into the attack more this season," Patterson said. "Coach Kimball worked with a bunch of us on finishing our shots and shooting more outside the 18 in the offseason.
The Tar Heels used 29 players with six freshmen earning playing time, including Dellarose who earned a start.
Carolina will host its second and final exhibition before the 2022 season next Saturday against 2021 NCAA National Championship runner-up BYU Dorrance Field. The kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Admission is free.
