Men’s Soccer Travels To Notre Dame For Saturday Night Tilt
September 23, 2022 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For just the second time this year, the University of North Carolina men's soccer team hits the road for an Atlantic Coast Conference clash at Notre Dame on Saturday night. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET at Alumni Stadium and will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
The Tar Heels arrive in Indiana – their first contest outside the state of North Carolina this season – with a 3-2-2 record, including a 0-1-1 mark in conference play. Looking to get back in the win column, UNC is coming off back-to-back draws with No. 5 Duke and UNCW.
Milo Garvanian leads the team with a pair of goals and an assist for five points and owns a team-high six shots on target while four other players have found the back of the net once. Between the posts, Andrew Cordes has 17 saves for a .773 save percentage and Marco Saborio-Perez made his first career start in UNC's last outing.
Til Zinnhardt, who was named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List earlier this season, is the lone Tar Heel who has logged a full 90 minutes in all seven matches so far. He led UNC's back line that held UNCW shotless for the first 54 minutes on Tuesday night, only allowing the Seahawks a pair of attempts on the night.
In the ACC Preseason Coaches' Poll, North Carolina was picked to finish second in the Coastal Division with five votes and 52 overall points, one spot ahead of Notre Dame which received one vote and 44 points for third.
Fresh off a 4-0 shutout over Chicago State on Wednesday, the Fighting Irish sit at 3-2-1 (1-1) with a win over Virginia and a loss to Syracuse in league play. Paddy Burns ranks first on the roster in goals (3), points (6), shots (14) and shots on goal (4) and netminder Bryan Dowd has made 19 saves for a .704 save percentage.
Saturday's tilt will be the 12th meeting in program history between the Tar Heels and the Irish with Carolina owning the all-time series at 6-3-2, including a 2-1-2 mark at matches played at Notre Dame. In the programs' last meeting on Oct. 29, 2021, UNC posted a 3-1 victory at home over its foe in the regular season finale.
