Volleyball Falls To Miami In Four

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Carolina volleyball team fell to Miami in four sets in Carmichael Arena on Friday night. Despite being out-hit .229-.165 in the match, the Heels defended their back court well, tallying 76 digs, a season-high, to Miami's 63, led by a season-high and match-best 26 digs from Charley Niego.
Sophomore Mabrey Shaffmaster led the Tar Heel offense with 17 kills, while Niego and Kaya Merkler finished the match in double-digits with 11 kills apiece.
With 11 kills and 26 digs, Niego tallied her second-straight double-double and her sixth on the season, a team-best.
Freshman libero Maddy May also had 16 digs, her ninth match of the season in double-digits.
Miami (9-5, 2-1 ACC) now owns the all-time series 18-17 over the Tar Heels (9-5, 1-2 ACC).
Set One: UNC: 14, Miami: 25
Miami came out hot to open the match, holding a lead the entirety of the first set. Although Carolina battled from the backline, the Hurricanes ultimately ran away with their net presence. The Hurricanes out-hit the Heels .500 to .037. Kaya Merkler led the Heels with 3 kills in the frame.
Set Two: UNC: 25, Miami: 20
The Heels came out swinging to open the second set, taking an early 9-3 lead. The Hurricanes fought back, bringing the set to within four, but an ace by Carson Overbeck for set point evened up the match. The Heels shifted their presence at the net, averaging a .205 hitting percentage. Both Merkler and Shaffmaster had six kills apiece, while Niego led the way on defense with 12 digs.
Set Three: UNC: 20, Miami: 25
Despite Carolina's 20 digs in set three, neither team was able to find a groove offensively, with Miami outhitting the Heels .184-140. The Hurricanes took the lead early and held onto it, despite Carolina tying it up twice. Shaffmaster had six kills while May had six digs.
Set Four: UNC: 23, Miami: 25
The Heels took the early lead, but a hard-fought battle was not enough for the Heels to take the match. Carolina rallied late to take a 21-17 lead, but a 7-0 Miami run closed the gap and ultimately helped the Hurricanes take the fourth set, despite the Tar Heels forcing three match points.
