Men’s Lacrosse Adds Murphy to Coaching Staff
September 7, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Peter Murphy, a 1997 UNC graduate and former team captain of the North Carolina Men's Lacrosse Team, has been added as volunteer assistant coach for the Tar Heels.
A three-year starter and All-America for Carolina, Murphy returns to his alma mater after years of success as a high school and club coach. Most recently in N.C., as the Defensive Coordinator at Cardinal Gibbons High School and as a Director and National Team Coach for True Lacrosse.
"It is incredible to be back home in Chapel Hill to coach a team that means so much to me," said Murphy. "Being able to work with Coach Breschi and these outstanding young men is exciting. I can't wait to get started."
Murphy coached two undefeated high school state champions in his tenure as a coach—at Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.) and Garden City High School (N.Y.). A native of Long Island, Murphy was also a two-time ACC Champion during his collegiate career, and he still holds his spot in the Tar Heel record books as third in all-time takeaways.
"Pete is an awesome addition to our coaching staff, and we are so excited to have him back at Carolina," said Joe Breschi, Carolina's Men's Lacrosse coach. "Not only was he a leader during his playing days here, but he also has coached young men to achieve great things—and I know he will help our program continue to achieve at the highest level on and off the field."
