January 18, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After a record-breaking meet in the home opener, University of North Carolina gymnasts Lali Dekanoidze and Julia Knower collected a pair of East Atlantic Gymnastics League weekly honors. Dekandoize was named Specialist of the Week while Knower was tabbed Gymnast of the Week.
Both in their sophomore season, this marks Dekandoize's sixth weekly EAGL award of her career and the fourth for Knower.
The dynamic duo was instrumental in Carolina's dominant 196.225-195.525 victory over NC State on Jan. 9, which was the highest team score during a home opener in program history. Dekanoidze (vault, bars) and Knower (beam, floor, all-around) combined to post the meet's top marks on all events.
A native of Matthews, N.C., Dekanoidze impressed with a 9.975 on bars, becoming UNC's outright program record holder and moving to No. 2 in the nation this season. She also matched her career best on vault (9.900) during her first time competing in Carmichael Arena since suffering a season-ending injury a year ago.
Knower earned her first all-around title of the season – and fifth of her career – against the Wolfpack with a score of 39.450, which set a new career high and moved to No. 8 all-time in UNC history. The Mandeville, La. native, whose scores on each of the four apparatuses ranked in the meet's top-3, also set new personal bests on bars (9.850) and floor (9.925).
The Tar Heels return to action on Monday, Jan. 23 for a tri-meet with UW Stout and Yale at 6 p.m. ET in Carmichael Arena. Admission is free and open to the public.
