Tar Heel Teams Lead At St Andrews

North Carolina leads the women's competition by two strokes and is tied for the lead in the men's draw after Monday's first round of the St Andrews Links Collegiate at the Jubilee Course in St Andrews, Scotland.

Fifth-year senior Kayla Smith birdied the 18th hole, one of her four birdies on the day, to finish 3-under-par 69, the only player in the women's field to shoot under par. The Burlington, N.C., native has a three-shot lead over Georgetown's Megan Smith.

On the men's side of the tournament, Carolina's fifth-year senior Dylan Menante was even par at the turn then came home in 4-under 31 to post 66, which is tied for second place, two behind Vanderbilt's Jackson Van Paris.

The No. 1-ranked Tar Heel men are tied with No. 4 Vanderbilt at 7-under 843. Notre Dame is third at 3 under and Georgetown is fourth at 1 over par.Â

Six players competed for each of the four teams with the best five scores counting toward the team total.

Menante got his back nine scoring started with an eagle three on the par-5, 535-yard 12th hole. The Carlsbad, Calif., native then birdied 14, 15 and 16.

Peter Fountain is tied for sixth after a 2-under 68, Kenan Poole is tied for ninth at 1 under and Maxwell Ford and freshman Hampton Roberts are tied for 11th at even par. Austin Greaser shot 73.

Smith made four birdies and only one bogey to shoot 69. She helped the Tar Heels shoot 12-over 372. Notre Dame is two back at 14 over and Georgetown and Vanderbilt are tied for third at plus 16.Â

Crista Izuzquiza is tied for third after a 1-over 73, freshman Regan Southerland and Vilde Nystrom are tied for ninth at 75. Ing Iadpluem shot 80 and Natalia Aseguinolaza opened with an 81.

Round two of the inaugural St Andrews Links Collegiate is Tuesday. The teams will compete in medal match play Wednesday at the Old Course.
