The Lead: After getting back in the win column last week versus the Campbell Fighting Camels, North Carolina will look to close out its 2023 home slate with a victory over arch rival Duke at Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels have won the last four matchups with the Blue Devils, including a last-second win over Duke last season in Durham.
Storylines:
- The Tar Heels have scored at least 40 points on six different occasions this season and a total of 43 times since Mack Brown returned to Chapel Hill in 2019.
- UNC has scored 30 or more points in 13 of its last 17 games.
- Last week, Omarion Hampton rushed for 100 yards in his fourth straight game. He became the first Tar Heel to rush for 100 yards in four straight games since Giovani Bernard in 2012.
- Against the Fighting Camels, Hampton reached 1,000 rushing yards in nine games, fewest by a Tar Heel since Giovani Bernard hit the 1,000- yard mark in eight games in 2012.
- Carolina has scored 37 times in 42 drives in the red zone this season. The Tar Heels have scored 26 TDs and have made 11 field goals when advancing into the red zone.
- Last week, Cedric Gray totaled nine tackles to pass Cole Holcomb for 10th at UNC in all time career tackles. Gray enters the week with 333 career tackles.
- Carolina has recorded an interception in eight of its nine games this season. Last week, Marcus Allen recorded an interception to continue the trend.
From The Notes:
- UNC is averaging 39.1 points per game this season. North Carolina is tied for 12th in the FBS in scoring.
- Drake Maye is one touchdown pass shy of reaching 60. He would become the fifth UNC QB to ever reach 60 in his career.
- Entering the week, Hampton ranks 4th in the FBS with an average of 118.6 rushing yards per game.
- Maye has thrown multiple touchdown passes in 18 of his 23 career starts.
Switching Sides:
- Of the 21 teams nationally with three losses on the year, Duke joins Southern California and LSU as the only schools with all three losses coming against Top-25 opponents.Â
- The Blue Devils are the only ACC school averaging 25.0 points per game (25.67 ppg, 8th) and allowing 15.0 points or less per outing (15.67 ppg, 1st).
- Duke ranks sixth in the ACC, averaging 5.84 yards per play. The Blue Devils have averaged 5.0 yards per play in five-of-nine games so far in 2023, missing the mark against No. 11 Notre Dame, No. 4 Florida State, No. 18 Louisville and Wake Forest.
- Head coach Mike Elko is in his second year at the helm and currently holds the second-best 22-game start (15-7) to a head coaching stint in school history.
