Four Tar Heels Named United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region
November 28, 2023 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four University of North Carolina women's soccer players have earned All-Atlantic Region honors, as announced by United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday. Garnering All-Atlantic First Team praise is Maycee Bell, Avery Patterson and Ally Sentnor while Savy King landed on the second team.Â
Bell finds herself on the first team for the second time in her career while fellow defender King is one of only three freshmen on an All-Atlantic team. It marks the second straight year both Patterson and Sentnor have collected such honor, as they received respective second-team and third-team honors a season ago.Â
This is also the ninth year in a row the Tar Heels have had at least three all-region honorees.
Regarded as one of the top defenders in the nation – and with good reason – Bell anchored a Carolina defense that allowed only 7.4 shots and 0.83 goals per game during the 2023 season. The redshirt senior started all 20 games she played in and had two goals and two assists on the year. She was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team at the end of the regular season.
Patterson, a senior, ranked second on the roster with nine goals and 20 points in addition to dishing out a pair of assists in her 22 starts. She had a brace against Syracuse on Senior Day and scored in three straight games during a tough stretch against Southeastern Conference opponents. The co-captain collected All-ACC First Team praise to complement her All-Atlantic Region selection.
A redshirt sophomore, Sentnor capped off the season with 11 goals, seven assists and 29 points to lead the team while starting all 23 games. Four of those goals and three of those assists came during the NCAA Tournament, and she netted five game-winners during the year.Â
Sentnor was also named the ACC Midfielder of the Year in addition to picking up first team honors. She became the first UNC player to earn a major postseason conference award since 2019, and the first to be named ACC Midfielder of the Year since the league began designating positional awards in 2004.
Joining Bell on Carolina's stalwart back line is King, one of the best freshmen in the nation. She started all 23 matches and capped off her rookie campaign with a team-high 2,030 minutes, also picking up two ACC Defensive Player of the Week awards. She was also selected to the All-ACC Second and ACC All-Freshman teams.
