VB Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker To Wake Forest

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina volleyball team (11-12, 5-9 ACC) fell to Wake Forest (17-8, 8-6 ACC) in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday afternoon in Carmichael Arena. After winning the first two sets, the Tar Heels dropped the next three sets, falling to the Demon Deacons in five.
Despite the loss, the Tar Heels had a balanced offensive attack, with four Tar Heels tallying double-digit kills. Graduate Emani' Foster led the match with 19 kills, hitting at a .357 clip, followed by junior Mabrey Shaffmaster (12), freshman Romani Thurman (11) and graduate Maria Miggins (10).
Freshman Zoe Behrendt tallied her second career double-double with 29 assists and 11 digs and set a new-career best with four of the Tar Heels' eight service aces. Sophomore Sadie Swift led the Carolina block with eight block assists, while Thurman tallied five block assists for the second time this season.
Sophomore Maddy May led the defense with 17 digs, a match-best, seven assists and an ace.
Other notable performances included freshman Sydney Nolan who hit a team-best .444 with nine kills, Carolina's sole solo block and four block assists, and sophomore Anita Babic with 19 assists and seven digs.
Carolina will face the Demon Deacons again next Friday in a 7 p.m. matchup in Winston-Salem.
