Carter, Walter Davis Announced As Naismith Hall Of Fame Candidates

Former Tar Heel wings and longtime NBA stars Vince Carter and the late Walter Davis highlight the first-time nominees for the Naismith Hall of Fame, announced this week.
The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced the list of eligible candidates for the Class of 2024, including several high-profile, first-time nominees: Carter, Davis, the 2008 U.S. Olympic Men's Basketball Team ("Redeem Team"), Seimone Augustus, Bill Laimbeer, Rick Barnes, Mike Fratello, Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway and Penny Taylor.
Carter career highlights:
First-team All-America selection in 1997-98 • Helped lead Carolina to ACC championships and Final Four appearances in 1997 and 1998 • One of the most spectacular dunkers to ever play the game • First-team All-ACC as a junior after averaging 15.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game and shooting an ACC-leading 59.1 percent from the field • Entered the NBA Draft after his junior season and was the fifth pick in the first round • Won NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 1999 and a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic Team in Sydney in 2000 • Retired from the NBA after 2019-20, his 22nd season in the NBA, the most in NBA history • Finished his career third in NBA history in games (behind Robert Parish and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), sixth in three-pointers (2,290) and 19th in scoring with 25,728 points.
Davis career highlights:
Olympic gold medalist in 1976 • Scored 1,863 points, grabbed 670 rebounds and had 409 assists as a Tar Heel • Banked in a 25-footer at buzzer to cap famous 17-second comeback against Duke in 1974 • Scored 31 points in 1975 ACC quarterfinal against Wake Forest, then held NC State star David Thompson to 7 of 21 shooting championship game victory • NBA Rookie of the Year with Phoenix in 1978 • Five-time NBA All-Star • Phoenix Suns retired his No. 6 jersey.
Tar Heels in the Naismith Hall of Fame include Dean Smith, as well as Larry Brown (coach), Ben Carnevale (coach) Billy Cunningham (player/coach), Bobby Jones, Michael Jordan, George Karl (coach), Bob McAdoo, Frank McGuire (coach), Charlie Scott, Roy Williams (coach) and James Worthy.
Finalists from the Honor's Committee for the Class of 2024 will be announced on Friday, February 16 in Indianapolis during NBA All-Star Weekend. The entire Class of 2024 will be unveiled during the NCAA Final Four in Phoenix on Saturday, April 6 in a nationally televised broadcast.
Enshrinement weekend will begin at the Mohegan Sun on Friday, August 16 with the Tip-Off Celebration and Awards Gala, followed by the Enshrinement ceremony on Saturday, August 17 at Springfield's historic Symphony Hall.
