Wolfpack Rallies Past Men's Basketball, 77-69

RALEIGH, N.C.—Jarkel Joiner scored 29 points as No. 23 NC State broke open a tight game in the final minutes and beat North Carolina, 77-69, at the PNC Center on Sunday afternoon.
After a Caleb Love free throw tied the score at 60-all with 6:02 remaining in the game, the Wolfpack went on a 9-0 run to take control and didn't look back.
Love finished with 23 points and has scored 20 or more in four consecutive games for the first time in his career. He hit 7 of 17 field goal tries, including 4 of 8 three-pointers, while also grabbing five rebounds.
Armando Bacot tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds for his UNC-record 66th career double-double and17th this season. Leaky Black had nine points and eight rebounds, and Puff Johnson contributed seven points and seven boards off the bench. RJ Davis's seven points were his fewest since December 13 versus The Citadel. He hit 2 of 13 field goal attempts and 1 of six three-point tries in a tough 40 minutes.
Black took the primary responsibility for defending Terquavion Smith, the ACC's second-leading scorer, who scored just 12 points on 5 of 16 shooting.
The Tar Heels lost for the fifth time in their last six games and fell to 16-11 this season, 8-8 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Carolina dropped to 2-7 on the road this season, including 2-6 in conference play. NC State improved to 21-7 (11-6) and has won 10 of its last 13 outings.
With the defeat, UNC is 36-6 against NC State in the last 42 meetings in the series and 53-13 in the last 66. Carolina is 18-6 against NCSU in PNC Arena.
The game was a close, back-and-forth (but not always pretty) struggle for the first 35 minutes.
UNC's defense was strong before halftime, holding the Pack to 30.0 percent shooting. But Carolina's eight first-half turnovers led to 12 Wolfpack points, and the Tar Heel defense didn't force a turnover in the same span. NCSU led, 32-31, at the break.
After halftime, State shot 20 of 31 (64.5 percent) while the Tar Heels were just 12 of 37 (32.4 percent).
In total, Carolina shot just 35.5 percent from the floor, including 31.8 percent from behind the three-point arc, and lost despite a 48-34 rebounding advantage.
The Tar Heels will return to play on Wednesday on the road at Notre Dame before hosting Virginia at home on Saturday February 25.
