February 19, 2023 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball (5-4) team fell to No. 25 Maryland (8-1) 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the ACC/B1G 10 Challenge at Anderson Stadium. Abby Settlemyre plated all three of the Tar Heels' run off her second three-run home run in the last three games.
Carolina tallied 11 hits in the matchup, with Skyler Brooks, Destiny Middleton, Bri Stubbs, Alex Brown and Settlemyre each accounting for two each and Aneshia Jordan tallying her first base hit of the season.
Lilli Backes (3-2) took the loss in the circle, throwing 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, four earned runs, two walks and recording one strikeout.
Talia Hannappel made her second appearance of the season, throwing 1.1 innings of relief, allowing no hits.
Maryland got on the board early in the first inning, stringing together three hits before a Tar Heel error advance a Terrapin runner at home, making it 1-0.
The Tar Heels took the lead in the fourth after Settlemyre's home run, going up 3-1.
Maryland then plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth off four hits to make it 4-3.
Carolina's best opportunity to tie up the game or take the lead came in the top of the seventh. Jordan reached on a fielding error, before a single from Brooks would have had two Tar Heels on with no outs. However, Jordan was called for obstruction, giving Carolina its first out.
Middleton then singled to the pitcher, before advancing on a groundout. With the tying runner 90 feet away, Stubbs was walked before the game ended on a popup from Brown.
The Tar Heels finished the weekend with a 2-2 record, dropping to 5-4 on the season.
