Double-Doubles By Nance & Bacot Lead 63-59 Win At Notre Dame
February 22, 2023 | Men's Basketball
NOTRE DAME, IND.–Caleb Love hit four free throws in the final 6.8 seconds to seal a gritty, 63-59 win by North Carolina at Notre Dame on Wednesday night at the Purcell Pavilion.
Â
The Tar Heels (17-11, 9-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame a dismal first half and snapped a two-game losing streak. Notre Dame (10-18, 2-15) lost its sixth consecutive game.
Â
Carolina won despite its worst overall field goal (33.3) and three-point field goal (8.7) percentages of the season. The Tar Heels were just 2 of 23 from behind the arc as a team.
Â
Pete Nance and Armando Bacot both posted double-doubles, and three UNC players had double-figure rebounds. The Tar Heels dominated the boards, 52-33, for their second-best rebound margin (+19) of the season.
Â
Nance finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Bacot had 16 points and 11 boards for his 67th career double-double, passing Wake Forest's Len Chappell for sole possession of fifth place in ACC history. Leaky Black had six points and 11 rebounds. RJ Davis tallied 12 points and eight rebounds, and Love finished with 16 and five, respectively.
Â
The first half couldn't have gone much worse for Carolina, as it missed 20 of its first 25 shots. Notre Dame wasn't much better, shooting 31.3 percent before halftime but using a 13-2 run over a span of 3:41 and eventually taking a 27-19 lead into halftime. The Tar Heels set season lows for points in a half (19) and field goal percentage in a half (.185).
Â
UNC rallied to start the second half, dishing out four assists on its first seven second-half buckets and going on a 15-4 run to take a 34-31 lead with 15:30 remaining. Neither team led by more than three points in the final 18 minutes until Love's final free throw gave the Tar Heels their final, four-point margin of victory with three seconds remaining.
Â
The Tar Heels swept the season series with the Fighting Irish and improved to 29-9 all-time in the series, including 13-4 since Notre Dame joined the ACC.
Â
Carolina will return to action on Saturday, when it hosts Virginia at 6 p.m. in the Smith Center. The Tar Heels will play their final road game of the regular season on Monday night at Florida State. UNC is in the midst of a four-game, nine-day stretch that began last Sunday at NC State.
