TALLAHASSEE, FLA.—North Carolina hit 14 three-pointers and won at Florida State, 77-66, in a key game on Monday night at the Tucker Center.
The Tar Heels ran out to a big lead, then held on during a late Seminole rally to improve to 19-11, 11-8 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. FSU never led in the game and fell to 9-21, 7-12.
UNC connected on 14 of 23 three-point attempts (60.9 percent), the third-best percentage in school history and best in over 20 years. It was the first time four Tar Heels made three or more three-pointers in a game in program history (three each by Leaky Black, RJ Davis, Caleb Love and Pete Nance).
Carolina got 19 points in 38 tough minutes minutes from Davis, as well as 18 points and nine rebounds from Black, who hit 3 of 4 three-pointers while tying his career scoring high.
Black put forth one of the top performances of his five-year career and has been on a rebounding tear lately, grabbing nine or more boards in six of the last nine contests. He played his 152nd career game, tying Deon Thompson for the all-time UNC record.Â
Love scored 16, while Nance had his second double-double in three outings with 15 points and 10 rebounds. UNC big man Armando Bacot finished with one point and eight rebounds in 21 minutes. He was 0 for 4 shooting and did not score until hitting a free throw in the final minute.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a quick start and led by 18 at 43-25 at halftime. FSU cut the lead to as few as four points in the final two minutes before a Black dunk, Davis jumper and six free throws from Nance put the game out of reach.
UNC shot 54 percent in the first half, including draining 11 of 18 three-point tries. The FSU defense stiffened and limited the Tar Heels to 34.5 percent overall and 3 for 11 from behind the arc after halftime.
Meanwhile, the Seminoles shot just 41.7 percent as a team in the game and missed 12 of their 15 three-point attempts. FSU dominated inside, outscoring UNC in the paint, 32-14, and its bench scored 35 points to eight by the Tar Heel reserves.
Caleb Mills led the 'Noles with 19 points, while Matthew Cleveland had 12 points and nine rebounds.
Carolina will conclude its 2022-23 regular season on Saturday evening at home against Duke.
