Softball Drops Game Two Against No. 15 Duke, 7-5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite three Carolina home runs, two off the bat of Abby Settlemyre, the Tar Heels (10-18, 1-4 ACC) dropped their second game against No. 15 Duke (23-5, 6-2 ACC) on Saturday afternoon, 7-5.
The Tar Heels had three errors in the loss, bringing their two-game total against the Blue Devils to six. Of the seven runs Duke scored on Saturday, just three were earned.
Settlemyre continued to be hot at the plate, becoming the first Tar Heel since Brittany Pickett in 2021 to hit two home runs in the same game. The redshirt senior had a team-best four RBIs on the day.
Isabela Emerling had Carolina's third home run, a solo shot. It was the first time Carolina has tallied three home runs in a game since 2021.The Tar Heels' catcher has recorded five hits in seven at-bats against the Blue Devils with three RBIs on the weekend.
Settlemyre got the Tar Heels going early with her home run, putting Carolina up 2-0 after one. Duke took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second, scoring three runs on two hits, including a home run, and an error.
Emerling's home run in the bottom of the second evened it up to make it 3-all.
The game remained tied until the top of the sixth when the Blue Devils tallied a pair of runs on two hits and an error to take a 5-3 lead. Duke then hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to go ahead by four runs, 7-3.
Settlemyre's second home run, a two-out two-run shot, in the bottom of the seventh brought the final score to 7-5.
Lilli Backes (4-9) took the loss despite allowing just one earned run with five hits and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
Talia Hannappel pitched the final 1.2, allowing a pair of earned runs and three hits.
Carolina will finish the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
