March 24, 2023 | Softball
BOSTON, Mass. – The Carolina softball team (12-21, 2-6 ACC) split its doubleheader with Boston College (16-12, 1-4 ACC) on Friday afternoon, falling 3-1 in game one before earning a 5-0 victory in game two.
Freshman pitcher Kenna Raye Dark threw her first complete-game victory, allowing just three hits and four strikeouts in game two. It was just the third time this season that Eagles had been shutout.
Carlie Myrtle and Destiny Middleton each plated a pair of runs between the two games, while Alex Brown went a team-best 3-of-6 at the plate.
In game one, the Tar Heels were limited to just three hits, one each from Abby Settlemyre, Middleton and Brown. After Settlemyre got Carolina on the board first with an RBI single in the third, the Eagles plated three runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning.
Lilli Backes (5-10), who started the game, took the loss in the circle. The sophomore pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three runs and six hits with four strikeouts.
Game two was a shutout for both teams heading into the seventh inning, with neither team able to get on the board. Brown opened the inning with a single before Kiersten Licea was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Myrtle, who came in as a pinch hitter, then hit a two RBI double to centerfield, giving Carolina a 2-0 lead.
With one on, Kianna Jones then reached on a fielder's choice before Middleton plated them both on a two RBI triple, making it home on a Boston College fielding error to make it 5-0.
With a 5-0 lead, Raye Dark (3-4) then kept the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the seventh, including a strikeout looking to end the game, to secure her third career victory.
The Tar Heels will look to earn the series victory on Sunday when they face the Eagles at 12 p.m.
