Miami Takes First Game Of Weekend Baseball Series
April 13, 2023 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Dario Gomez broke a tie with a squeeze bunt in the ninth inning, and Miami defeated No. 13 North Carolina 5-4 Thursday night in game one of their three-game weekend series.
Gomez's bunt plated Jacoby Long, who pinch-ran for Edgardo Villegas after he drew a walk to lead off the frame. Renzo Gonzalez singled, and CJ Kayfus grounded out to allow Long to move over to third base with one out.
All-America closer Andrew Walters (3-0) tossed a hitless bottom half of the ninth to close the game. He struck out three of the six UNC hitters he faced over 2.0 innings.
"In my opinion, he's the best closer in the country," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "There aren't that many guys that have that type of stuff with that type of command. They've been going to him only when they've been ahead. They've been struggling on the road, and they went for this game, and we went for this game, but that's the way it works."
Kevin Eaise (2-2) took the loss, allowing one run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks in 2.0 innings. Matthew Matthijs and Matt Poston combined for two innings of relief, with Matthijs yielding the game-tying home run.
"Our relievers were sensational," Forbes said. "I thought Poston was outstanding and Eaise was outstanding. I have nothing negative to say. It was two great teams playing, and they got the win today."
Hunter Stokely hit a three-run homer in the third to give North Carolina (23-11, 8-6 ACC) a 4-2 lead. Jackson Van De Brake doubled down the right field line to plate Casey Cook, who singled to start the inning with the Tar Heels' first run.
Stokely and Mac Horvath each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Lorenzo Carrier homered, and Blake Cyr had an RBI double in the top half of the third to stake Miami (21-12, 9-7) to a 2-0 advantage.
Ian Farrow doubled to knock in a run in the fourth, and Cyr tied the game with a home run in the sixth.
Both starting pitchers threw 5.0 innings, with UNC right-hander Max Carlson allowing three runs on eight hits and UM righty Gage Ziehl surrendering four runs on seven hits. Carlson struck out six, and Ziehl fanned five.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.
