No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse Drops To No. 1 Syracuse

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 5 North Carolina women's lacrosse dropped a hard-fought 14-12 decision to No. 1 Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at Dorrace Field in the regular season home finale.
The Tar Heels now sit at 11-3 (6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) on the year while the Orange improve to 15-0 (7-0).

North Carolina makes the trip to nearby Durham to face RV Duke for the regular season finale on Thursday, April 20. First draw is set for 5:30 p.m. ET at Koskinen Stadium and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU.
Prior to today's game against the Orange, the Tar Heels honored their graduating class in Anna Barton, Olivia Dirks, Julia Dorsey, Lauren Figura, Gabi Hall, Elizabeth Hillman, Bailey Horne, Humphrey, Briana Lantuh, Livi Lawton, Nalls, Brooklyn Neumen, Mason Paradine, Sconone and Katherine Thompson as well as athletic training graduate assistant Maddie Schulz for Senior Day.

How It Happened
- Earning her first career start, senior Melissa Sconone struck a minute in to put North Carolina on the board first.
- Syracuse tallied three in a row before Nicole Humphrey got UNC within one, but the visitors had the last two of the quarter to hold a 5-2 lead after the first 15 minutes.
- Alyssa Long's goal with 6:26 on the clock in the second frame sparked a 4-0 run for UNC that would last until the halfway point of the third.
- The Tar Heels out-scored the Orange 4-3 in the second quarter, but trailed 8-6 at the break.
- Humphrey made it a hat trick with 4:23 on the clock to tie the game at nine apiece, but two straight from Syracuse gave it an 11-9 advantage heading into the final quarter.
- Reilly Casey got the home team back within one while Long's second of the day tied it up at 11-11 with 8:45 remaining.
- Two goals from the Orange in the final four minutes put them ahead 14-12, which stood as the final score.

- UNC had an 18-12 edge in draw controls, led by Long with a career-high and game-high eight.
- Carolina also had five caused turnovers to Syracuse's three behind two from Emily Nalls.
- Goalkeeper Alecia Nicholas made five saves between the pipes.
