No. 6 Women’s Lacrosse Hangs On For 13-12 Win At Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – It was a back-and-forth battle between two in-state foes in the regular season finale, but the No. 6 University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team held on for a 13-12 win over Duke on Thursday evening at Koskinen Stadium in Durham.
Following the win, the Tar Heels cap off the regular season with a 12-3 overall record and 7-2 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Blue Devils fall to 7-9 (1-8 ACC).
How It Happened
The Tar Heels now turn their attention to the 2023 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship presented by Ally. Having already clinched a first-round bye, North Carolina will begin play in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, April 26, at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Seeding, opponents and times will be announced at a later date. All nine games in the newly expanded 10-team format will be broadcast on ACC Network.

How It Happened
- The Tar Heels out-scored the Blue Devils 4-1 in the second quarter after trailing 5-1 at the end of the opening frame.
- Long's tally with a second remaining on the clock got Carolina within one, but it still trailed 6-5 at the break.
- Back-to-back goals from Melissa Sconone in the first five minutes of the second half gave UNC its first lead of the day at 7-6.
- Long made it a hat trick with 2:35 left in the third before Lauren Figura found the back of the cage, putting UNC up 10-9 heading into the final 15.
- Two straight from Kaleigh Harden and one from Marissa White gave them their largest lead at 13-11 with just under seven to go.
- Duke added another with 4:32 remaining, but its last-minute effort fell short as UNC hung on for the win.
- UNC edged out Duke 13-8 in ground balls, led by Nalls with a season-high four.
- The Tar Heels had eight caused turnovers to the Blue Devils' four behind Livi Lawton's game- and career-high three.
- Olivia Dirks and Nalls both had a team-high four draw controls.
- Alecia Nicholas made five saves between the pipes.
- Carolina improves its record in the all-time series with Duke to 29-14.
- UNC and Duke have played 13 one-goal games in history, with UNC having now won seven of them.
- Caitlyn Wurzburger notched her 100th career goal and is 15 points away from the 200-milestone.
- K. Harden, who has scored in three of the last four contests, tallied her first career hat trick.
- Long's 13th goal of the year marked the first hat trick and fourth multi-goal game of her career, all which have come this season.
- Sconone also recorded her fourth career multi-goal game, which was her first since May 2, 2021.
- Marissa White is the lone Tar Heel who has scored in every contest this year.
- UNC has scored double-figure goals 71 times in their last 74 games.
- UNC has won 61 of its last 65 games, and 69 of its last 74 games.
