Seminoles Down Men's Tennis, 4-2, In ACC Quarterfinal
April 21, 2023 | Men's Tennis
CARY, N.C.—Fifth-seeded Florida State won the doubles point and didn't look back as the Seminoles beat fourth-seeded North Carolina, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Park.

With the win, Florida State (19-7) advanced to Saturday's semifinals to face top-seeded Virginia, which beat No. 8 seed Miami, 4-1, in another Friday quarterfinal. Carolina fell to 17-8.
"We struggled in doubles, and that sort of set the tone," Tar Heel head coach Sam Paul said afterward. "We just didn't play a complete match, up and down the line.
"Congrats to Florida State. They played hungry, they outplayed us. In certain spots, we had our opportunities. It's time to pack it up and get ready for the NCAA Tournament."

The Seminoles won the doubles point to take an early, 1-0 lead. Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif beat the 13th-ranked duo of Ryan Seggerman and Casey Kania, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles. Meanwhile on court three, Maks Silagy and Barnaby Smith beat Will Jansen and Karl Poling, 6-4.

Carolina quickly tied the score when Seggerman, ranked No. 51 nationally, beat Loris Pourroy, 7-6 (3), 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

The 'Noles retook the lead when Jamie Connel won at No. 6 over Anuj Watane, 7-6 (1), 6-2, only to see the Tar Heels tie it back up at 2-2 when Poling beat Dous-Karpenschif in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6.

FSU clinched the team victory with back-to-back wins by Andreja Petrovic at No. 5 over Benjamin Kittay, 7-6, 6-4, and No. 109 Youcef Rihane over Will Jansen at No. 3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Tar Heels now await an NCAA Tournament bid.
