Men's Lacrosse Falls At No. 1 Notre Dame, 16-9

SOUTH BEND, IND. - After falling behind in the first quarter, the No. 15 North Carolina men's lacrosse team (7-6, 1-4 ACC) fell to top-ranked Notre Dame (9-1, 3-1 ACC), 16-9, on Saturday at Arlotta Stadium.

- After Notre Dame scored in the contest's opening 10 seconds, Dewey Egan knotted the game up at one with 12:25 remaining in the first.
- The Irish ended the opening quarter on a 5-0 run, holding a 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.
- Following Chris Kavanagh's goal with 11:32 left in the first half, North Carolina ended the half scoring five-straight goals, with the host Irish leading 7-5 entering the break.
- UNC would be outscored 4-1 in the third quarter, with Egan finding the back of the net for the second time, as Notre Dame held a 11-6 edge entering the fourth quarter.
- Egan would complete the hat trick with 13:47 left in the contest, however the Irish answered with a 4-0 spurt to extend their lead to eight, 15-7.
- Back-to-back goals in the middle of the fourth courtesy of James Matan would trim the deficit to six, however a Notre Dame man-up goal with just over four minutes remaining would seal the deal, as the top-ranked Irish were victorious, 16-9.
- Egan and Matan both posted hat tricks for the Tar Heels in the game.
- Ryan Levy, Logan McGovern and Harrison Schertzinger all found the back of the net once.
- Andrew Tyeryar (15-24) and Graham Schwartz (5-6) combined to win the faceoff battle for UNC.
- Collin Krieg stopped nine shots between the pipes on the day.
- With the Irish win, the all-time series with Notre Dame is tied at 11-all.
- Egan's hat trick was the first of his career for the San Diego, Calif. native.
- McGovern extended his goal and point streak to 13 games.
- Matan's hat trick was his sixth multi-goal game of the year, the most for a Tar Heel first-year since Jimmy Bitter in 2012, with 10 multi-goal performances.
- After a week off, the Tar Heels will host Notre Dame for the regular season finale for senior day from Dorrance Field. Opening faceoff on May 6 with the Irish is slated for noon, and can be watched on ACC Network.
