Baseball Defeats GT Behind Arm Of Carlson And Six-Run Fourth
April 6, 2023 | Baseball
ATLANTA – Max Carlson pitched seven strong innings, Tomas Frick homered in a six-run fourth and No. 13 North Carolina took game one of its three-game ACC Coastal Division series from Georgia Tech 8-1 at Russ Chandler Stadium on Thursday.
Frick, Hunter Stokely, and Colby Wilkerson each collected two hits for the Tar Heels, who improved to 5-2 away from Boshamer Stadium to match their road win total from a year ago.
Carlson (2-1) allowed one run and five hits, striking out eight and walking two. The right-hander struck out the side in the first inning and retired the first six men he faced, sitting down the side in order in three of the first four innings.
"I sat down with Coach Gaines and watched some video to figure some things out," Carlson said. "We made a game plan going forward and I was able to execute it today."
"A lot of that credit goes to Coach Gaines," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "They spent a ton of time at Notre Dame watching video and working on certain things. That's where we're lucky to have such great people doing all the work."
Georgia Tech starter Dawson Brown (1-2) blanked UNC until the fourth when the Tar Heels touched up the righty and reliever Demitri Diamant for six runs.
Frick's three-run homer made it 4-1 after Vance Honeycutt's single plated the tying run. Wilkerson doubled in a run and Casey Cook singled in a run for a 6-1 lead.
Johnny Castagnozzi singled home a run in the fifth and Wilkerson drove in his second run of the game in the seventh.
Georgia Tech (18-12, 6-7) scored its lone run with two outs in the third on an RBI single from Kristian Campbell. The Yellow Jackets threatened to score multiple runs in the inning, but right fielder Mac Horvath threw out Jadyn Jackson at third base to snuff out the rally.
"That was the play of the game in my opinion," Forbes said. "We got out of it with only one run. If he doesn't throw him out, I don't know if we get out of it only allowing one run, but that's how you win, pitching and defense."
The Tar Heels only allowed two runners to reach second base for the rest of the game. Honeycutt robbed Stephen Reid of a two-run homer in the sixth.
Kevin Eaise pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.
The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets will continue their series Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
