May 12, 2023 | Softball
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Carolina softball team's season came to an end on Thursday night in the ACC Championship quarterfinals, falling to No. 10 Clemson 2-1 in eight innings at Melissa Cook Stadium. The Tar Heels finish the 2023 season with a record of 26-28 (13-10 ACC).
Despite the loss, sophomore Lilli Backes (16-14) threw another gem in the circle. In her fifteenth complete game of the season, she limited the Tigers to just four hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts.
Clemson got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning, scoring on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
The Tar Heels responded in the top of the fourth. Skyler Brooks tallied an RBI infield single that allowed Abby Settlemyre to score from second base to make it 1-1.
It remained a tie game until the bottom of the eighth inning, with both team's pitchers dealing. Clemson opened the bottom of the eighth with a double to left center, advancing to third on a passed ball before walking it off on a wild pitch.
It was the first extra inning game in the ACC Tournament since 2010 when Virginia Tech beat Virginia, 1-0, in eight innings.
