Another Stellar Season For Men's Tennis In 2023

The University of North Carolina men's tennis team continued its run as one of the nation's most successful programs in 2022-23, earning success on and off the court and continuing its longstanding success under 30th-year head coach Sam Paul.
Season Team Highlights
• The Tar Heels tied for third place in the ACC regular season standings and hosted NCAA Championship first- and second-round matches for the ninth consecutive year.
• Carolina advanced to the NCAA Championship round of 16 for the ninth consecutive time.
• The beautiful, new Chewning Tennis Center made its debut at midseason, giving Tar Heel student-athletes and tennis fans a game-changing, first-class facility that rivals the very best in the nation.
• The North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame honored the many career achievements of 30th-year head coach Sam Paul by inducting him into its Hall of Fame.
• Graduate students Ryan Seggerman and Brian Cernoch both earned at-large invitations to the NCAA Singles Championship.
• Cernoch, Seggerman and Casey Kania earned All-ACC honors.
Individual Player Highlights
• Graduate student Brian Cernoch earned third-team All-ACC honors in singles, becoming a four-time All-ACC pick (twice in singles, twice in doubles).
• Graduate student Ryan Seggerman grabbed second-team All-ACC honors in singles and first-team recognition in doubles in his first year as a Tar Heel after transferring from Princeton.
• Sophomore Casey Kania, Seggerman's doubles partner, joined him in earning first-team All-ACC accolades in doubles and manning the No. 1 doubles slot throughout the dual match season.
• London native Ryan Jansen joined the Tar Heels in January and posted one of the best seasons by any freshman in the nation. He manned the No. 3 singles spot in the starting lineup throughout the spring and showed the potential of a future star.
• Graduate student Karl Poling, Seggerman's former Princeton teammate, dominated at the No. 4 singles spot all season and teamed with Jansen to start in doubles throughout the dual campaign.
• Senior Mark Dillon, a Morehead-Cain Scholar, was named the Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete for men’s tennis in recognition of his stellar career in the classroom and on the court.
