May 19, 2023 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina Men's Lacrosse Coach Joe Breschi, who has led the Tar Heels to 10 NCAA Tournaments, a national title and is the program's winningest head coach, has agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension. The new contract runs through June 30, 2026.
"Coach Breschi is proud to teach Tar Heel student-athletes not only how to succeed in competition, but also how to give back to the community while balancing academic responsibilities,'' UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said. "He brings in talented recruits, builds great camaraderie, graduates strong leaders and knows how to win championships. We are happy he will continue to lead our Carolina Men's Lacrosse program."
The three-time Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year and 2016 USILA Coach of the Year, Breschi, a 1990 Carolina graduate, recently completed his 15th season as head coach in Chapel Hill. His 10 NCAA Tournament appearances include two Final Fours: 2016, when the Tar Heels won the fifth national title in program history, and 2021, when the Tar Heels were the top-ranked team in the country. His 152 victories are the most in program history.
Under Breschi's leadership, the Tar Heels have recorded 39 USILA All-America First-, Second- or Third-Team honors, and five ACC Players of the Year. In addition, three different Tar Heels have been named a Tewaaraton Award Finalist: Billy Bitter (2009), Marcus Holman (2013) and Chris Gray (2021, 2022).
"It's an honor to coach this program. I'm grateful to have the support of Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz, Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham and the Board of Trustees, and I appreciate their confidence in me and their support of Carolina Men's Lacrosse as we move forward," Breschi said. "Our program goals have always been to recruit the best student-athletes in the country, compete for championships and be dedicated members of the Carolina Family, and I'm excited about the future of Tar Heel Men's Lacrosse."
In the classroom, Breschi's teams have produced multiple All-ACC Academic Team members in each season, including Gray's ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor in 2021. The Tar Heels have posted an Academic Progress Rate of 960 or higher in all 15 seasons, including four perfect multi-year 1000's. His teams have long been committed to serving the community, as well, collecting numerous Tar Heel Leaders of Distinction awards, Lowe's Senior Class Award finalists and multiple ACC Six for Service recognitions.
