BRISTOL, CONN. - North Carolina defensive midfielder Connor Maher was selected in round two of the 2023 Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) College Draft, by Archers Lacrosse Club with the 13th overall selection Tuesday evening.
Maher is the fourth Tar Heel selected in the PLL College Draft, since the league's inception in 2019. Maher joins Chris Gray (2022), Tanner Cook (2021), and Justin Anderson (2021) to hear their names called in the draft.
Now a three-time All-America honoree, Maher finishes his North Carolina career appearing in 64 contests, collecting 195 groundballs and causing 95 turnovers during his time in Chapel Hill.
The Timonium, Md. native garnered All-America recognition on multiple occasions from USA Lacrosse Magazine, Inside Lacrosse, and USILA, adding All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2021 and 2022. In the classroom, Maher was named to the All-ACC Academic Team and ACC Academic Honor Roll twice each, and was named a Top-10 Scholar-Athlete at UNC in 2022.
In addition, former Tar Heel defenseman Will Bowen '21, was selected seventh overall in the draft by Chaos Lacrosse Club. After redshirting in 2019, Bowen returned to the field in 2020, playing in all seven contests during the shortened season. In his first full collegiate season in 2021, Bowen led UNC with 28 caused turnovers while adding 37 groundballs, helping North Carolina to the No. 1 overall seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament and a berth in the Final Four. In spring of 2021, Bowen graduated from UNC in just three years, and recently completed his master's degree and athletic eligibility at Georgetown.
Maher and Bowen will join eight former UNC players currently active on PLL rosters, with Maher joining Mark McNeil '14 on the Archers, as Bowen teams up with Chris Cloutier '18 and Jack Rowlett '19 on Chaos LC.
