CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Owen Duffy, an incoming freshman for the North Carolina men's lacrosse team, has been named the 2023 USA Lacrosse High School Boys' Player of the Year, USA Lacrosse Magazine announced Thursday.
Duffy, an attackman from St. Anthony's High School in Melville, N.Y., was also named the Newsday Long Island Player of the Year.
"Owen is extremely deserving of the honors given this week by USA Lacrosse and Newsday," head coach Joe Breschi said. "He's an phenomenal young man, that excels in every aspect, in the classroom, in his community, and on the lacrosse field, and we're excited to have him join the Carolina community this fall."
"It's a great honor to receive this award and wouldn't be possible without my teammates and coaches, as well as everyone else who's supported me," Duffy said. "I'm extremely grateful, and I can't wait to get down to Chapel Hill and get to work this fall."
The No. 4 player in the Class of 2023 according to Inside Lacrosse, Duffy led Long Island CHSAA scorers with 78 points (43 goals, 35 assists) this past spring in 13 games. The future Tar Heel attackman scored five goals in four games, and registered seven-or-more points in six games this spring. In his final two seasons of high school at St. Anthony's, Duffy recorded 147 points.
This past spring, Duffy helped St. Anthony's to a 12-1 record, capturing its third-straight CHSAA title, while finishing the season third in the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School poll.
The National Player of the Year and the entire Carolina Lacrosse Class of 2027 will arrive in Chapel Hill this fall.
