Baseball Season Ends With Heartbreaking Loss To Iowa
June 4, 2023 | Baseball
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Michael Seegers tripled home the go-ahead run in the 13th inning, and No. 2 seed Iowa eliminated No. 3 seed North Carolina from the NCAA Terre Haute Regional 6-5 on Sunday, ending the Tar Heels' season at 36-24.
With two outs in the 13th, Seegers tripled into the left-center field gap as the ball got past the diving Mac Horvath and rolled to the wall, allowing Coy Sarsfield to score standing up from second base.
Will Christophers (5-1), who the Tar Heels had touched up for three runs in a 1/3 inning Friday night, retired the side in order in the bottom of the 13th. He pitched 4 2/3 hitless innings and struck out four.
Horvath forced extra innings with a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, sending the dugout into a frenzy.
He finished the game 3-for-5 with a double and a home run to complete his junior campaign with 24 home runs and 47 extra base hits, both the second-highest totals in UNC history.
North Carolina trailed 5-2 with two outs in the eighth until redshirt freshman Dylan King hit a two-out, two-run double into the right field corner off reliever Jack Whitlock to bring the Tar Heels within a run.
Tomas Frick and Hunter Stokely chased Iowa starter Ty Lagenberg with consecutive singles to start the frame.
Langenberg pitched 7.0 innings and allowed four runs and seven hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
Brennen Dorighi put Iowa ahead 4-2 with a three-run shot in the fifth, hitting Kyle Percival's 1-2 pitch over the right field wall.
Radier Tello lifted a sacrifice fly in the third, as did Kyle Hucksdorf in the seventh.
Casey Cook put the Tar Heels ahead in the second with a two-run blast to right field after Colby Wilkerson drew a lead-off walk.
Dalton Pence (4-3) pitched the final 4 2/3 innings and allowed one run on three hits with three strikeouts.
