The Tar Heels improve to 2-0-2 on the season following the win, while the Trojans suffered their first loss and drop to 2-1.
How It Happened
- North Carolina set the pace of the game quickly, creating several opportunities early on and firing off five shots at the halfway point of the opening frame.
- The Tar Heels found the chance they were looking for in the 25th minute. Ally Sentnor, who held off a defender to create open space, sent a strike from 25 yards out to the top of the net for her first goal this season.
- The Tar Heels outshot the Trojans, 12-0, during the opening 45 minutes of play, the second consecutive game UNC has kept its opponent scoreless at the half.
- The home team doubled its lead in the 63rd minute after Kate Faasse found open area near the right endline, allowing her to send a cross to Shores at the top of the six-yard box. Shores then volleyed it into the lower left of the net, marking the first goal of the freshman's career.
- Shores soon made it her first career brace, netting her second of the day less than three minutes later. Melina Rebimbas' pass went through two USC defenders to Talia Dellaperuta, whose assist found Shores right inside the 18-yard box. Shores' shot was first stopped by USC keeper Hannah Dickinson before slipping out of her gloves and over the goal line.
- A foul inside the box with 2:38 remaining awarded the Tar Heels a penalty kick. Tori Dellaperuta converted her attempt, extending UNC's lead to 4-0 which stood as the final score.
- Anchored by Maycee Bell, Emerson Elgin, Savy King and Emily Moxley, Carolina's stalwart defense prevented USC from taking a shot until the 51:29 mark.
- Shores becomes the sixth current Tar Heel to record a brace.
- UNC took a season-high-tying 25 shots to USC's five, also holding an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
- UNC's defense has held every opponent to five shots or fewer this season.
- Sentnor had a game-high five shots while both Olivia Thomas and Shores led all players with two shots on target.
- Emmie Allen made one save between the posts for her third clean sheet this year.
- A season-high 26 different Tar Heels saw the pitch during the contest.
