August 31, 2023 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The North Carolina field hockey team dives into a two-game weekend at the ACC/Ivy League Conference Crossover on Friday, taking on the host Penn Quakers at 2 p.m at Ellen Vagelos Field.
Louisville and Princeton face off at 11 a.m. on Friday in the event's first game. The teams switch opponents for Sunday, with the Tar Heels taking on the Tigers at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Cardinals and Quakers at 1:30 p.m.
All action will air on ESPN+.
The Tar Heels are 1-1 on the season following a pair of top-10 contests last weekend at home. In another four-team event, the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, UNC beat No. 4 Michigan 3-2 in front of a record home crowd of 1,700+ on Aug. 25 then fell to No. 7 Iowa 3-2 in overtime on Sunday.
Friday's game is Penn's season opener.
The weekend is a homecoming for 10 Tar Heels who hail from the state of Pennsylvania and the first of two trips to Philadelphia this season. Carolina will return here to take on Saint Joseph's on Oct. 1.
Heels vs. Quakers
• Friday's game is the seventh meeting between UNC and Penn, with the Tar Heels winning all six of the previous matchups.
• The two met in Philadelphia in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 seasons but have not faced off on the Quakers' home turf since then.
• The 2022 matchup took place in Chapel Hill as UNC hosted this event. On Sept. 4, 2022, Carolina won 4-0, with current team members Ryleigh Heck and Kiersten Thomassey scoring goals. (The other two came from seniors Meredith Sholder and Erin Matson.)
