Tar Heels Score Season-Hgh Six Goals In FH Win Over App State
September 24, 2023 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina exploded for a season-high six goals, all before halftime, to earn a home-turf victory on Sunday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium, 6-1 over Appalachian State.
The Tar Heels improved to 7-1 overall with the win in the first meeting with the Mountaineers (5-4) since the 2019 season.
Freshman Sanne Hak scored her first and second goals as a Tar Heel, sophomore Ryleigh Heck also scored twice, and senior Kiersten Thomassey and freshman Charly Bruder added the other two scores. The Mountaineers' goal came with 35 seconds to play on the team's only penalty corner of the day.
"We definitely wanted to set the tempo, play to our standards, and I think we did today," UNC coach Erin Matson said. "We had lots of scorers, we had lots of variety in our attack, we had team defense, we were able to get everybody on the field. Overall, it was a good day.
UNC was awarded a penalty stroke 7:46 into the game and Hak got the call. She sent the ball into lower right corner of the cage to put the Tar Heels ahead for good with her first collegiate goal.
Less than a minute later UNC scored again on its first corner of the day. Sietske Brüning took the initial shot and Heck got her stick down to deflect the ball up and into the goal for a 2-0 lead.
Not even a minute later the Tar Heels added another, with Thomassey carrying the ball into the circle and sending a rocket into the cage.
Carolina tacked on three more in the second quarter. In the 21st minute, UNC made it two-for-two on first-half penalty corner opportunities with Heck again scoring, this time redirecting in a ball from Jasmina Smolenaars on the right side.
Heck assisted on the next goal, in the 25th minute. She carried the ball into the circle from the right and pushed it to Bruder, who sent her shot through the legs of the App State keeper to make it 5-0.
In the final minute of play before halftime, Hak scored off a turnover, carrying the ball from midfield into the circle and shooting on the run to make it 6-0.
The Mountaineers' goal came with 35 seconds to play, on their only corner of the day. The initial shot was blocked but Lise Boekaar picked up the ball and sent it to Hadley Kuzmicky for the score, ending the Tar Heels' hopes for a third-consecutive shutout. The two shots on the last-minute corner were ASU's only ones of the afternoon.
UNC led 28-2 in shots and 8-1 in corners. All 24 available Tar Heel players saw action, with Maddie Kahn and Abigail Taylor splitting the game in the cage. ASU's Addie Clark played all 60 minutes for the Mountaineers, making 10 saves.
UNC is back in action next Sunday (Oct. 1) with another nonconference game, traveling to take on Saint Joseph's in Merion Station, Pa. The Tar Heels' next home game is Oct. 6 against Boston College.
