CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Peter Murphy, a 1997 graduate and former team captain of the North Carolina men's lacrosse team, has been named the program's director of operations.
"We're thrilled to see Murph move into the role of director of operations for our Tar Heel lacrosse program," head coach Joe Breschi said. "His passion for the game and this program is unmeasurable, and I'm excited to see the positive impact he continues to have on our young men, on and off the field."
A three-year starter and All-America honoree for the Tar Heels, Murphy spent the 2023 campaign as a volunteer assistant for the program.
"It is incredible to continue to get to work at the school and with the program that means so much to me," said Murphy. "Being able to work with Coach Breschi, the incredible staff and our student-athletes we have is amazing, and I'm excited to continue to make an impact in this new role."
In addition to the duties assigned as director of operations, Murphy will be joining the board of Heels Helping Heels, serving as the liaison between the program's alumni and current student-athletes.
With his role alongside Heels Helping Heels, Murphy will assist in the mentorship program designed to pair men's lacrosse alumni with current players, to position the athletes for success in college and after graduation.
Prior to his role as the program's volunteer assistant, Murphy spent time as the defensive coordinator for Cardinal Gibbons High School and a director and national team coach for True Lacrosse.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., Murphy was a two-time ACC Champion during his collegiate career and is still ranked third all-time in takeaways in program history.
