Rolland Named Semifinalist For Campbell Trophy
September 27, 2023 | Football
CHAPEL HILL – University of North Carolina offensive lineman Spencer Rolland has been named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation announced on Wednesday. Celebrating its 34th year, the Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
Â
Rolland, who was named a semifinalist for the same award as an undergraduate at Harvard, embodies the qualities the Football Foundation looks for in its Campbell Trophy honorees. He's already earned a mechanical engineering degree with a minor in astrophysics from Harvard and is now working on his MBA at UNC. Rolland has been an Academic All-American and an Academic All-District and all-conference performer.
Â
On the field, Rolland has started at right tackle in all 17 games he's played as a Tar Heel. Last season, he blocked for a Carolina offense that averaged 34.4 points per game (26th NCAA/3rd ACC) and 462.8 yards per game (19th NCAA/2nd ACC). He logged 975 snaps last season in 13 games. This year, Rolland has helped Carolina to its first 4-0 start since 1997, while starting each game at right tackle.
Â
Off the field, Rolland is heavily involved in the community. He's taken part in service efforts with the YMCA, UNC Children's, Habitat for Humanity, TEAM Impact, the Ronald McDonald House and many more.
Â
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 25, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas for the 65th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on Dec. 5, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 34th Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
