Swimming Set To Open Season At Queens
September 28, 2023 | Swimming & Diving
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC men's and women's swimming teams will open the 2023-24 season on the road Friday, Sept. 29, with a dual match at 4 p.m. in Charlotte against Queens University as the Tar Heels lift the lid on a campaign against the Royals for the third consecutive season.
North Carolina swept the dual meet against Queens each of the two previous seasons.
"I like swimming against Queens to start," head coach Mark Gangloff said. "It gives a lot of our athletes looks at a lot of different events, especially with freshmen, and trying to figure out where we're going to plug them in throughout the rest of the season is really important."
The women's team has 21 returners and 13 new faces, while the men's team has 22 returners and 11 new faces.
The UNC women's team is led by All-America swimmers Olivia Nel, Greer Pattison, Skyler Smith and Ellie VanNote.
Smith earned second-team All-America honors in the 100 breaststroke, as did VanNote in the 200 butterfly. The four swimmers also received All-America accolades as part of one or more of the Tar Heels' four All-America relay teams.
Seniors Patrick Hussey and Noah Rutberg will be counted on to provide leadership and points on the men's side, along with sophomore Louis Dramm, who earned All-America honors in the 400 IM as a freshman.
