Six Wrestlers Ranked In First NCAA Coaches' Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Six North Carolina wrestlers were ranked in the first NCAA Coaches' Rankings for the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, announced Monday morning.
Spencer Moore (No. 30 at 125), Lachlan McNeil (No. 5 at 141), Jayden Scott (No. 22 at 149), Tyler Eischens (No. 30 at 174), Gavin Kane (No. 22 at 184) and Max Shaw (No. 17 at 197) were among the Tar Heel representation.
The coaches' rankings are determined by a vote of 14 coaches in each weight class, with two head coaches from each of the seven conferences.
With an overall record of 9-2, including a perfect 7-0 dual mark, Moore has two ranked wins on the year, against Brandon Kaylor of Oregon State and Justin Cardani of Illinois. In his last match, the Crittenden, Ky. native defeated Appalachian State's Noah Luna by decision.
At 141-pounds, McNeil has 17 victories on the year, as well as an unblemished 9-0 dual record. The reigning ACC Wrestler of the Week, McNeil has nine ranked wins to his resume, as well as holding seven major decision victories. Last season at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, McNeil finished fourth at 141-pounds, claiming All-America honors for the first time in his career.
Tar Heel 149-pounder Jayden Scott holds 10 wins thus far on the campaign, including a 4-3 decision over No. 27 Cody Bond of Appalachian State. Last time out for Scott at Soldier Salute in December, the Henrietta, N.Y. product collected two major decisions and a decision in the two-day event.
A three-time NCAA qualifier during his time at Stanford, Eischens has four wins so far in his Carolina career. At Soldier Salute in December, the Anoka, Minn. native earned two first-period falls. Last time out for the Tar Heels, Eischens was victorious over Jonathan Conrad of Brown by major decision.
Earning his first All-America finish a season ago, Kane finished eighth-place in Tulsa last spring at 184-pounds. In the 2023-24 campaign, Kane has eight victories, including four major decisions.
Rounding out at 197-pounds, Shaw has 13 victories on the year, including an 11-0 mark in Carolina dual action. The Pittsburgh, Pa. native has three major decisions, two technical falls and one fall on the year so far. Last season, Shaw earned his second NCAA Championships at-large bid, defeating Penn's Cole Urbas to begin the tournament.
Carolina begins ACC dual action this Friday, traveling to Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels conclude the non-conference portion on Sunday, welcoming Navy to Carmichael Arena.
