USA Bounces Back With 2-0 Win Over Colombia At FIFA U17 World Cup
October 20, 2024 | Women's Soccer
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Needing at least a point to remain in FIFA Under-17 World Cup contention, the United States U17 Women's Youth National Team earned that and more with a dominant 2-0 win over Colombia in its second Group B match.Â
North Carolina freshman defender Trinity Armstrong is currently representing Team USA at the FIFA U17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic. The tournament runs from Oct. 16-Nov. 3.Â
Starting at center back, Armstrong helped give the stars and stripes its first shutout of the World Cup against Colombia. She even registered a shot that ultimately hit the right post in the sixth minute.
The 17-year-old Armstrong is one of four college players on the U.S. roster, and she now has six international caps already on her resume. She logged a full game against both Spain in the World Cup opener as well as against Colombia, and she was the only current college player in the starting XI against Spain.
Team USA will take on Korea Republic in its final group stage game on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 4 p.m. ET in Santiago de los Caballeros, about 95 miles north of Santo Domingo.
The red, white and blue will enter the final day alone in second place, two points ahead of both Korea Republic and Colombia. Goal difference is the first tiebreaker: If Spain beats Colombia, a draw or a win for the USA against the Koreans would send the Americans through to the quarterfinals.
All matches of the 2024 FIFA U17 World Cup will be broadcast in English on the FOX Sports family of networks and online on FoxSports.com with corresponding authentication in Spanish on the Telemundo networks.

Armstrong was the youngest player on the U.S. squad that won the Concacaf U17 Championships in February to secure a spot in the World Cup. She was named captain against Puerto Rico in that tournament.Â
Enrolling in college a year early, Armstrong quickly became an anchor on Carolina's back line. She helped limit opponents to 6.5 shots per game and 2.7 shots on goal per game – in addition to being instrumental in seven shutouts on the season – before leaving for national team duties on Oct. 6.Â
The Frisco, Texas native started the first 12 matches of the season. She was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24, becoming the first freshman to win the award this season. She was also ranked No. 4 on Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Top 100 Freshmen list.
