Seven Double-Digit Scorers As Tar Heels Dump Johnson C. Smith, 127-63
October 27, 2024 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.— Ninth-ranked North Carolina had seven double-digit scorers and cruised to an easy, 127-63 exhibition win over Johnson C. Smith on Sunday afternoon in the Smith Center.
The Tar Heels shot 61 percent in the first half, closing the period on a crushing, 34-11 run after the Golden Bulls pulled within a bucket at 25-23 at the 8:53 mark. Carolina led by 25 at the half and never looked back, eventually leading by as many as 67 in the final minute.
Freshman Ian Jackson led the way with 21 points, hitting 6 of 10 shots from the floor and 8 of 10 free throws. Junior transfer Ven-Allen Lubin added 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Seth Trimble and preseason All-America RJ Davis each added 15 points., while Jalen Washington had 12 and seven rebounds and Elliot Cadeau posted 12 points and eight assists without a turnover.
"I liked the pace after the 12-minute mark in the first half," said Tar Heel head coach Hubert Davis afterward. "It starts with getting stops and getting rebounds, and we weren't getting stops and weren't getting rebounds. But from that point on, we did a better job of guarding the ball, getting stops, getting rebounds, and that then allowed us to get out in transition. I still think we can play faster, but I did like the pace."
The Tar Heels mounted an 11-0 run that included six straight points by RJ Davis, opening a double-digit lead at 36-23. They eventually built a lead as large as 25 in the closing minutes to lead, 59-34, the break. Davis had 11 points and Trimble added 10 in the first half.
Carolina kept its foot to the gas pedal early in the second half, rushing out to a 14-5 run to start the half and take a 73-39 advantage on a breakaway dunk by Jackson.
"I did see all the rotations and lineups that I wanted to see," Hubert Davis said. "I was really encouraged by the versatility and the type of depth we have."
In the game, UNC held a 72-24 advantage in points in the paint, a 26-6 edge in points off turnovers and a 34-0 lead in fast break points.
The Tar Heels will tip off their regular season on Monday November 4 when they host Elon at 9 p.m. in the Smith Center.
